Treatment options of fibromyalgia
After osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia is the most common rheumatologic disease. An abnormality in the neurological system makes one more sensitive to pain. It was only in the mid-2000s that guidelines to manage this disease were formed and drugs invented to manage it. One common treatment cannot work with all patients considering the number of symptoms and the health condition of each person. Hence, a combination of approaches works best to combat the condition. Medication, physical activity, and psychological therapy together have been the most effective. Medication Medicines that target the central nervous system like antidepressants and anticonvulsants are the approved medication for fibromyalgia. This medication will reduce the pain, help patients to sleep. Better sleep patterns reduce anxiety and depression. Regular sleep to a certain extent also controls fatigue and exhaustion. But sleep medication over a long period of time, can be ineffective and no longer induce sleep. Mild painkillers or even paracetamol can reduce pain as the symptoms start. But even these are not advised for regular consumption. Since the symptoms themselves fluctuate, medication can be used at the time of flare-ups rather than when they are mild. Most of the medication is safe but prolonged usage with high dosage can result in side effects.
