Factors causing low libido in men
Society more often than not equates libido to manliness even though this is not the case. Due to its perception and the belief that having problems with it will make one less of a man, most males do not like to accept libidinal issues. Testosterone is the primary hormone that governs libido in men. Physical, social and psychological factors adversely affecting it causes an individual to have low libido.
- Medication for chronic diseases like diabetes, HIV/AIDS, asthma, cancer and osteoporosis have some side effects on the body. One such negative effect could be on the sexual desire of the person undergoing a drastic change and being lower than usual.
- Erectile dysfunction (ED) is another cause of low libido in men. Men having ED issues are constantly under the fear that it will repeat during sexual intercourse, leading to performance issues.
- Hormone imbalance is the primary cause of low libido. Injury, inflammation, or tumors in the testicles will affect testosterone levels. This has a direct bearing on the male libido. Cirrhosis of the liver affects the capacity of the organ to break down estrogen, resulting in an increase in estrogen levels. High estrogen level lowers the libido. Pituitary diseases cause hormone imbalance by reducing testosterone in the body affecting the sexual desire.
- Serious systemic diseases like cancer and kidney diseases cause low levels of testosterone in the body and affect sperm production. Other illnesses such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and renal diseases also affect testosterone levels. Basically, when the body is fighting diseases, it does not pay much attention to non-survival functions like producing testosterone and sperm.
- Chronic stress will affect the hormone levels in the body thereby lowering the libido. Stress can cause the arteries to narrow down and restrict the blood flow causing erectile dysfunction. Moreover during stressful periods, one tends to have an extremely low sexual drive.
- Issues like depression will also interfere with the hormone levels of the body. An individual might be incapable of taking an interest in sex while suffering depression while medicines prescribed for the condition will also have side effects on the libido.
- A low self-esteem will have adverse effects on the sexual desire of a person. An unattractive person may be pulled back from engaging in physical activities by the thoughts of rejection.
- Drugs and alcohol abuse is another cause of low libido. While a little alcohol can help arouse sexual instincts, too much of it will cause fatigue and impair the nervous system. Drugs like marijuana suppress the pituitary glands which produce testosterone thus, lowering the sexual drive.
- Sleeplessness can cause elevation of cortisol levels which suppresses the libido. There is also a connection between sleeplessness and ED.
- Trouble in the relationship can be a major cause of low libido. Frequent fights with the partner will distract the mind from sexual desires. Infidelity by a partner is another reason for low libido. Anger, fights, and boredom arising out of the relationship can kill the sexual desire in an individual.
- Aging lowers the hormonal levels. A man’s sexual drive reaches its peak during his teens and gradually falls during his lifetime. There will be a sudden rise in the testosterone at puberty and an extreme drive for sex.
- While exercises are great for physical health, overdoing them, will cause fatigue and lower the libido.
