Natural Flea Management in Pets

Flea treatments don’t have to be full of harmful ingredients. Instead, there are some natural alternatives that will keep pets safe and comfortable. These tried and true methods have been helping pet owners out long before harsh sprays and pills ever hit the market. Each one balances natural care with the strength needed to take on these pesky pests. More than that, these ingredients are also readily available at any store and affordable for all budgets:

1. Apple cider vinegar
This all purpose food ingredients is a powerful deterrent against fleas. Working on both cats and dogs, it’s also a safe solution for households with more than one pet. When it comes to this item, there are two distinct ways to use it. Mix a solution that evenly divides vinegar and water, then add the mixture to a spray bottle. Be sure to cover the pet’s back and legs. As always, make sure not to come in contact with eyes. If the pet is nervous about DIY flea spray, there is another external option. Spray the mixture on your hands and rub it into the fur. It can also be given to pets via their water dish. Add a tablespoon or less to their water. With any mixture of this type, make sure your pet can safely take this and always check with your vet before starting a regime like this.

2. Water and dish soap
Dish soaps are a surprising ally in the fight against fleas. Start by mixing together a pan of water and dish soap. Make sure the pan (or bowl) has lower sides. Sit it out of the way and let the fleas jump in. As soon as it is full, empty the pan and start again. The only drawback is someone must be watching it at all times, mainly because the pet could try to drink any open sources of water. Another surprising use of dish soap is as DIY flea baths. Wet the pet’s fur completely with water,then lather the dish soap across the body. Per usual, avoid getting any soap around the face, eyes or ears. After a minute or two, rinse off the water and quickly dry the pet. Any fleas on their body will be dead and ready to be combed off.

3. Regular cleaning
One of the best ways to control fleas is to clean regularly. Vacuum all floors at least once a week, more if there are signs of the pests. A mixture of lemon juice and vinegar on surfaces also helps to disinfect as it prevents fleas from laying eggs. Using baking soda and warm water mixtures on flooring as it creates an own barrier and works well around corners as well as hidden areas.

4. Do some gardening
Planting flea deterring plants are an effective way to keep fleas out of the home. Catnip, lavender, and citronella are all examples of plants that are easy to care for and act as a natural barrier.
